As we watch the federal government withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and roll back environmental regulations at a record pace, our local commitment to the environment is more urgent now than ever before.
As your Councilmember, I will be a steward of our environment. My top priorities include:
- Protecting the bay from pollution
- Creating a greenbelt biofilter of trees along I-80 to reduce the public health risk from highway air pollution in nearby neighborhoods
- Improving our local parks and open spaces
- Reducing waste, particularly plastic
We must also recommit to our climate action goals by reducing vehicle miles traveled. Our urban design, especially our streets and sidewalks, should promote biking, walking, and using public transit. We also need to grow in a sustainable way along public transit corridors like San Pablo and University, so more people can get to their jobs without needing to drive.
As your Councilmember, I will also take a “climate change in all policies” approach to governance. We should choose the greenest options whenever making public expenditures, such as replacing our city fleet of cars with electric vehicles, providing priority parking for electric and car share vehicles at city-owned lots, and renovating public buildings to be energy efficient.
